This type of home was associated with the houses, churches and government buildings of the period between about 1600 through 1850, which refers to the colonial period in United State including First Period English, French Colonial, Spanish Colonial, Dutch, German Colonial and Georgian Colonial. .
The colonial style architecture is found from coast to coast and from north to south in the United States. This type of home has several identifying features such as the architecture, which is very symmetrical and square, it is similar to salt box style wooden house, which has two-stories high home. Nevertheless, colonial homes tend to center around the fireplace, with either one chimney in the center of a home, or commonly two chimneys at either end of the home. The other feature is narrow side windows flanking the front door were have different appearance on each style. Generally, there is decorative crown above front door that enhances the appearance of the house.
As mentioned before the colonial style was built in the colonial period thus there are different types of Colonial architecture stemming from the different cultures that developed their communities. For several types like the typical Dutch colonial were built in stone and has an overhang in front, often covering a porch and others type like salt box style were built with wood siding and a flat front.
